Description

This is one of the many plants discovered and introduced by Dara Emery of the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. It was a chance seedling in the garden. ‘White Lanterns’ is thought to be closely related to the Vine Hill manzanita, Arctostaphylos densiflora. It grows slowly as a wide mound of densely spaced leaves over mahogany bark. The white blooms cover the plant in winter - nearly obscuring the foliage in a mature specimen. It is quite adaptable to a variety of growing conditions and will thrive with little or no supplemental water once established.
