Description

This manzanita is found on Santa Cruz and Santa Catalina Islands off the coast of southern California. It grows as an upright shrub or small tree with smooth bark of chocolate brown (dark, that is, about 70% cocoa). The leaves are bright green when young, maturing to olive green. The winter flowers are light pink, occurring in dense clusters. Santa Catalina Island manzanita is one of the taller manzanitas, growing to eighteen feet or so over many years. It is adaptable to many growing conditions, accepting less-than-perfect soil drainage and some shade. With judicious summer pruning, it can become an impressive centerpiece.
