Description
Little sur manzanita is a resident of the immediate coast from the Monterey Peninsula down to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. It grows as a dense ground cover in this ocean moderated environment to about one foot in height, with round dark green leaves and bronze colored fresh growth. The typical pendent, urn-shaped flowers are white, sometimes with a blush of pink. The ‘Bert Johnson’ selection originated at Tilden Botanic Garden. It thrives in well-draining soil with some protection from the afternoon sun. The dense, flowing growth form makes ‘Bert Johnson’ manzanita a great choice for slopes or raised beds - any planting with some vertical structure for the plant to spill over. Plant beneath tree-form manzanitas such as Arctostaphylos gabilanensis or Arctostaphylos bakeri ‘Louis Edmunds’ where ‘Bert Johnson’ can receive some shade from a partner plant with compatible requirements.
