Description

Dune sedge is an occasional member of coastal plant communities from Santa Barbara County north. It grows in an expanding clump of soft blades to about 8 inches in height. In its natural setting, dune sedge will go largely dormant during the dry season. With the first soaking rain new blades appear and rhizomes move out in all directions. It often naturally intergrades with Carex praegracilis, a sedge common to inland areas. In the garden dune sedge may be kept green with a little water and will continue to expand throughout the year. Dune sedge is often recommended as a low water lawn replacement since it fills in nicely and bears a little foot traffic.
