Description

This variety of California buckwheat has a reputation for being the toughest variety of a rather tough species. It is found throughout the range of the species, but is the most prevalent variety in hot interior regions of southern California. The ‘Margarita Fog’ selection has proven to be quite happy in a rocky, naturalized bed in full sun in my garden in San Jose. It is compact, upright and rounded with the needle-like leaves typical of the species. The leaves have a gray hue, which explains the ‘fog’ portion of the common name. The ‘Margarita’ part remains a mystery. Among the many virtues of this selection are the upright flower clusters that appear in mid-summer, when few other native plants are blooming. ‘Margarita Fog’ is a great choice for small gardens.
