California’s buckwheat species have provided many exceptional plants for the home garden. Their foliage is attractive, they flower generously, and generally look great throughout the year with little water. Red flowered buckwheat adds to these characteristics a red flower – relatively rare among California’s native plants. This Channel Island endemic forms a low mound of blue-green foliage, softened with a coating of fine white hairs on the leaf surface. It thrives in full sun to mostly sun (at least six hours) in well-draining soil. In the fall or winter the dry flower heads may be removed (after the birds have had their fill) to clean up the plant for the next round of blooms.
