Our Lord’s Candle is emblematic of dry chaparral and coastal scrub in California’s southern mountains. It is found as far north as about Fresno. It grows in a rounded array of extremely sharp gray-green leaves. After several years, it will send up a marvelous inflorescence (flower stock) to 12 feet or so, topped with numerous creamy white flowers. The plant dies after this display. Hesperoyucca whipplei requires a hot, dry, sunny placement in well-draining soil to thrive. You may also grow it in a decorative pot (well away from foot traffic). Mulch with a thick layer of gravel to prevent weed growth, since weeding can be a challenge around the base of the sharp leaves. I find that it is possible if one sweeps one’s hand under the leaves and bends them up, exposing the ground. The leaves are supple and bend easily without damage.
