Description

This member of the pea family is a rather uncommon inhabitant of mountain plant communities throughout much of the state. In Santa Clara County one occasionally encounters it at higher elevations in the Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve. It grows as an open, fountain form of compound leaves. The flower clusters consist of numerous tubular flowers of white and maroon. These produce multiple pendent seed pods which add visual interest. The broadleaf hosackia accepts a variety of soils and is quite drought tolerant once established. Fall planting is encouraged to increase success with this unusual plant.
