Description

Douglas iris is one of the most popular California native plants. This hardy and attractive species ranges along the coast from Oregon to Santa Barbara County. The grass-like foliage grows in an expanding clump to about a foot or so. Canyon snow was selected by Dara Emry of the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden from plants grown from seed derived from Iris douglasiana alba. The large white flowers are striking, especially in the shade that douglas iris prefers. Canyon snow can be kept fairly dry, but does need occasional moisture and will respond well to regular irrigation. Water retentive soil is best. As with all irises, the planting will look better if the clump is lifted and divided every few years.
