Description

The Del Norte County iris is native to northwest California into southern Oregon. It grows in a dense clump of rather narrow leaves to just under a foot in height. The Del Norte County iris is famous for the varied and vibrant colors of its spring flowers. These range from a base color of white to yellow and vivid purple, with veins demonstrating a similar range of variation. Iris innominata is often used as one of the parent plants for iris hybridization, contributing to the Pacific Coast Hybrids so popular in the nursery trade. It prefers a fairly shady setting, well-draining soil and a modest amount of summer water. Like many irises, Del Norte County iris does quite well in a pot. Divide the expanding clumps every few years in the fall to encourage a bountiful flower display.
