Description

Beardless wild rye is found growing in much of western North America in sunny, at least seasonally moist areas. It has an upright, dense form and spreads via rhizome to form a dense stand. The thin, narrow flower stalks rise above the foliage in spring, eventually turning gold as the seeds develop. The ‘gray dawn’ selection was discovered near Watsonville, CA. The gray-green leaves grow to about three feet. It is a great choice for a meadow planting, or where its dense network of roots can stabilize the soil. Beardless wild rye accepts a variety of soil types and light shade.
