Description

Davidson’s Penstemon grows as a low mat of olive green leaves at higher elevations from the central Sierra Nevada up into British Columbia. It is part of the subgenus Dasanthera, which includes some of the more beautiful alpine penstemons. Davidson’s penstemon flowers densely with tubular purple blooms. The alpine species often resent hot weather and wet winters at lower elevations and can wither away rather quickly. Davidson’s penstemon has tolerated nursery conditions for several years. Some customers have reported initial success. Nonetheless, growing this plant in a Bay Area garden should be considered an experiment. Well-draining soil is a must, as with most penstemons. Some afternoon shade protection and regular water are also prudent.
