Description

This variety of Penstemon procerus is endemic to high altitude locations in the Sierra Nevadas and Klammath Mountains of northern California. As the common name suggests, it grows in a tight, low mound of small, rounded leaves - just 2 inches tall or so. The flowers are blue to lavender, borne on short panicles. Although native to alpine locations, this penstemon has proven quite adaptable in the garden when given a well-draining site with sun to partial shade and occasional water. Pincushion penstemon is an ideal subject for a decorative pot, which it will fill then over-top with cascading foliage.
