Description

Kellogg’s yampah inhabits grasslands in central and northern California. It was likely a component of the valley grassland plant communities before the introduction of western agriculture. Yampah grows close to the ground with feathery compound leaves. The flower stock rises to about three feet, topped with an umbel of white flowers which provide nectar for our local anise swallowtail butterfly. Kellogg’s yampah produces offsets each year, eventually forming a large patch. It will thrive in a variety of soil types if given ample sun. Kellogg’s yampah must be allowed to go completely dormant during the summer – no water.
