Description

California goldenrod is a hardy member of many plant communities throughout the California Floristic Province (Portions of the state with a mediterranean climate). It thrives in sunny, open places where it grows as a low patch of oblong, lance-shaped leaves. A leafy stock develops during the summer, maturing with a panicle of bright yellow flowers. California goldenrod will go nearly completely dormant in the fall and winter. With the winter rains the green leaves will re-appear and expand the patch via underground rhizomes. Full sun and at least moderately well-draining soil seems best. Once established, California goldenrod can be allowed to naturalize, i.e. no supplemental water, but it also tolerates fairly regular water.
