Description

Desert bluebells grace the inland areas of Southern California with a spring display of purple tinted foliage covered with flowers of purple or blue. The foliage mounds to about 18 inches or so. Desert bluebells prefer a sunny location and soil of at least medium drainage. Occasional water will extend the bloom into the early summer. If planted in the fall, no supplemental water is needed. Although desert bluebells thrive in the Bay Area, they do not seem to volunteer from seed even though the seed is viable. Plant desert bluebells with California poppies or blazing stars (Mentzelia lindleyi).
