Description
The giant vetch grows at the coast and in areas of high coastal influence from Point Conception in Santa Barbara County to Alaska. This mounding vine has frond-like, compound leaves composed of numerous oval leaflets. It seems to grow among other plants (like honeysuckle or clematis) rather than covering them (like grape or morning glory). The flowers occur in clusters, ranging in color but generally magenta. The sickle-shaped seed pods remind us that the giant vetch is a member of the pea family. This highly adaptable vine accepts a variety of growing conditions. It responds well to water but is quite drought tolerant once established.
