Description

Huckleberry oak is one of California’s many shrub oaks. This low-grower thrives at elevations above 3,000 feet in the Sierra Nevada and Cascades. It is the highest occurring of all our oaks. It forms dense stands of oval leaves to about four feet in height. Like other shrub oaks, the growth rate is quite low. The acorns ripen into little spheres set deeply in their cups. Although huckleberry oak grows at high elevations it is said to do well at lower elevations. A sunny site with well-draining soil is a suitable approximation of its natural plant community. The small size of this oak is ideal for small gardens, of course. Huckleberry oak is evergreen and does best with little summer water once established in the landscape.
