Description
This little liveforever is found on a couple Channel Islands (Catalina and San Nicolas) and the Palos Verde peninsula on the mainland. Like so many dudleyas it thrives under the moderating effects of the Pacific Ocean. The narrow, fleshy leaves of this sub-species have a waxy gray hue. They are oval in cross section and ascending (growing upright). Like all dudleya, a sandy, well-draining soil works best. Summer water is tolerated as long as the drainage is adequate. In inland locations some shade is required. Bright shade with no direct sun exposure may be best where the sun is intense. These little survivors will shrivel up in the summer if naturalized but will almost miraculously return to active growth in the winter. Dudleya are great candidates for a potted native.
