Description
Foothill penstemon is found in mountainous settings throughout California except the southeastern deserts. It grows as a rounded herb or sub-shrub with lance-shaped leaves. The tubular flowers naturally range from lavender to blue. The exceptional beauty of foothill penstemon has attracted the attention of plant breeders for over a century. ‘Blue Spring’ is one of the many resulting named cultivars. The leaf color is olive green and the flowers are a deep sky blue. It prefers a sunny spot with well-draining soil, though occasional water will improve the plant’s summer appearance. For more dense foliage, tip prune young plants. Remove the spent flower heads to encourage additional blooms.
