Description

This wild vine grows in shady moist areas throughout western North America from British Columbia to Mexico. The gray, waxy stems grow in an open, mounding bramble. The stems are covered with thorns which call for long sleeves and work gloves when working around the plant. The leaves are tri-lobed with serrated edges and a bright white underside. Each branch will flower and bear fruit in the second year of growth and then die, so a yearly pruning will be needed to clean up the patch. Alternately, the bramble patch can be left to its own, providing shelter and berries for wildlife. Western raspberry is accepting of many soil types but does need regular water and shade. Winter deciduous.
