Description

The sierra currant is one of the more adaptable of California’s currants. Although it grows at higher elevations, it does quite well at lower elevations. It can thrive with regular water, or can be kept dry as well. The main ingredients for success with the sierra currant are well-draining soil and a shady site. The plant grows in a vase shape to about six feet, with tri-lobed dark green leaves. The winter blooms come in bunches of small magenta flowers. The blue berries have a waxy coating. Like all California currants, sierra currant will lose its leaves in the fall. It begins to leaf out in early spring, which is later than many currants from lower elevations.
