Guadalupe Island lies about 250 miles from Baja, Mexico. Because of the moderating effects of the Pacific, the summer’s are more mild than on the mainland, resulting in a Mediterranean climate pattern. This tiny island is in fact the southern limit of that climate pattern on the West Coast (although Cedros Island may hold that distinction). The Guadalupe cypress grows on the northern highlands of the island, growing as a multi-trunk tree with a rounded crown. The ‘Greenlee’s Blue Rocket’ selection was introduced by San Marcos Growers in Santa Barbara, CA. It is unusual for its blue-green foliage and narrow, upright form. Like other cypresses of the West, this is an adaptable tree, accepting a wide range of soil types. Certainly, a sunny site with at least moderately well-draining soil may well be ideal. Occasional deep summer water is recommended.
