Description

Catclaw is a large shrub of southeastern California, the Southwest and northern Mexico. It grows as an open shrub or small tree with silver bark. Like other Acacia relatives, the leaves are frond-like with many oval leaflets. The cream-colored flowers are clustered in spikes. These are quite fragrant and attract a range of pollinators. The flowers yield numerous sickle shaped pea pods. As the plant’s common names suggest, the branches are covered with very sharp recurved thorns which must be handled with care to avoid injury. Catclaw grows easily with little care, and will likely be evergreen in moderate climates. It is tolerant of temperatures to 25F or colder. This plant should be considered poisonous to pets and livestock. Truly a plant that can protect itself! An excellent choice if a hardy, deer proof barrier is required.
