Description
While the manzanita are most common within the (US) state of California, there are quite a few that are found outside the state. For the most part, these species also grow in California, but with occurrences elsewhere. Baja California is home to eleven manzanita species, some of which are found there and nowhere else. The Baja manzanita it one of the endemic species. It grows in the desert regions of western Baja, just south of the California Floristic Province. This region only gets three or four inches of rain a year. Baja manzanita forms an upright shrub with smooth bark and oval leaves. The blooms are typically light pink, appearing in late winter. It is perhaps obvious that an appropriate site for this rare manzanita will have well-draining soil and abundant sunlight.
