Description

This Santa Barbara Botanical Garden selection of this Channel Island endemic has proven to be a fine garden performer. It has a rounded form and displays leathery oval leaves against smooth cinnamon bark. With judicious summer pruning, ‘Canyon Sparkles’ may be trained into a small tree. Large clusters of white flowers appear in mid-winter. I grow mine with some protection from the afternoon sun in Santa Clara County (Sunset zone 15) to account for the ocean moderated environment of its island habitat. Said to be a good candidate for a large pot (rare among manzanitas). It has been particularly enduring in a nursery pot.
