Description

Sand aster is common along much of the coast and – somewhat surprising – the lower foot hills of the southern Sierra Nevada. The ‘silver carpet’ selection was introduced by the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden from material originating in Monterey County. It is popular for its perennial beauty and adaptability. ‘Silver carpet’ sand aster mounds up to about one foot with silvery, nearly white foliage. It will quickly spread along the ground if in a good location. In late summer ’silver carpet’ is thick with one inch violet flowers with yellow centers. A perfect plant for slopes or walls over which it will “flow” in a silvery cascade.
