Description
Acton encelia is found in hot, dry areas from the southern San Joaquin Valley into Nevada and Baja. It has a round form to about four feet, gray-green leaves and bright yellow flowers. The contrast between the gray foliage and large, yellow flowers is quite striking. Acton encelia thrives in full sun and well-draining soil. It would be something of an experiment to plant it in a coastal setting. Like its cousin, Encelia californica, Acton encelia resents supplemental irrigation once established. Summer watering will shorten its life. Plant with other summer-dry natives such as ceanothus, buckwheat, buch poppies or abutilon. In its natural setting, Acton encelia is drought deciduous.
