Description
Uvas Canyon is a distinct little pocket on the eastern side of the Santa Cruz Mountains. There is an unusually high amount of rainfall there, so high that the canyon supports a substantial grove of redwoods. As one moves up the canyon the forests give way to expansive chaparral. Somewhere in this varied landscape the ‘Uvas Canyon’ selection was taken in 1986 by Karen Sulivan of Lake County Natives (quoted on the Las Pilitas Nursery website). In a surprising twist, although I live less than an hour from Uvas Canyon, I needed to purchase this selection in San Diego County to obtain parent stock. Despite the drive, I am glad I did. It has proven to be quite attractive with silvery green leaves and a generous display of orange-red flowers. ‘Uvas Canyon’ is a nice size at two feet in height and has a dense habit. Like all fuschia, the plant will look better if pruned hard in the later fall.
