Description
This selection of the widespread coffeeberry was taken from the crest of the Santa Cruz Mountains. It is a rarity among coffeeberry selections in that it is a reliable compact form which is also fairly garden tolerant. The shiny dark green leaves form a dense mound to about three feet tall and six wide. The yellow-green flowers yield clusters of prominent berries that progress from yellow to red and eventually deep purple. These are attractive, but best left for wildlife to eat. ‘Ed Holm’ coffeeberry is easy to maintain in the garden, accepting a variety of soil types and sun exposures. In hotter sites, some protection from the afternoon sun is appreciated. Occasional summer water is helpful once established.
