Description
Coffeberry is one of California’s most widespread shrubs. It occurs in many forms in nearly every county in various plant communities. In size it ranges from three feet to twenty feet or more. It is well loved in landscapes for its hardiness, large dark green leaves over silver bark and large berries that progress from yellow, to orange, to red then dark purple as they develop. The smaller forms are preferred for most gardens. ‘Little Sur’ is one of the smallest selections available. It forms a tidy ball to four feet or so. This selection was taken from the mouth of the Little Sur River in Monterey County. Tree of Life Nursery in Orange County introduced it in 1987.
