Description
Largeleaf avens grows in moist, shady, mountainous sites throughout much of California and beyond. The deep-green leaves are round and lobed with serrated edges. These grow low to the ground in an expanding patch in the presence of moisture. The bright yellow flowers of this rose relative illuminate a shady bed in the spring. Largeleaf avens makes for a satisfying groundcover where conditions are right. The hotter the summer weather, the more shade is required. A shady setting also will help conserve water. Largeleaf avens is a hardy container plant, as are many moisture-loving natives. Container culture will require regular division to prevent overcrowding.
