Description
The common sun rose is one of California’s miracle plants that thrives and blooms generously in some of our harshest environments. One often encounters it along crest trails in exposed sunny sites from the SF Bay Area to San Diego County, and in the central Sierra Nevada. Locally, it can be found in the El Sereno Open Space Preserve. It grows as a short rounded bunch of green stems covered with bright yellow flowers. It is somewhat similar in appearance to deer weed, Acmispon glaber. A sunny spot with soil of at least medium drainage is a good site for the common sun rose. It will so semi-dormant in the summer without supplemental irrigation after it is established.
