Description
This SF Bay Area endemic is found in shady places that are seasonally moist. It grows with a tri-leaflet compound leaf in an open, spreading patch to about three feet in height. The flowers are purple and white, very similar to a lupine flower in appearance. As the summer progresses, Loma Prieta leather root will become semi-deciduous, though it may be kept green with additional water. It is entirely dormant in the winter (no above-ground growth), but will re-emerge with fresh growth and spreading rhizomes in spring. Loma Prieta Leather root is found in sloped area, so well-draining soil is best, though I suspect it will tolerate slower draining soils. This is a great choice for a shady spot that needs some spring color.
