Description
This peculiar little perennial grows in shady, moist places from Northern California to Alaska. Like many members of the saxifrage family it grows as an expanding mat of round leaves, sending up a flower stock punctuated by small bell-shaped flowers. The peculiar thing about the piggyback plant is that it produces little plantlets at the leaf nodes. These fall off and take root when conditions are right. Piggyback plant is often grown as a potted perennial. If grown in a pot it will need to be divided every so often once the roots fill the pot. Provide piggyback plant with a shady setting in fairly rich soil with regular moisture. The flowers, though small, are quite ornate and warrant a closer look.
