Description

Ithuriel’s spear is a common spring flowering bulb of the Sierra foothills and coastal mountains of northern and central California. In mid-winter it sends up a few narrow leaves which are followed by a flower stalk topped with an open umbel of lavender to blue flowers. Ithuriel’s spear will slowly spread by offsets (“cormlets”) and will volunteer from seed readily in its native range. As with all bulbs (“geophytes”), water must be withheld from late spring through October, during which time the plant will disappear. Ithuriel’s spear looks great massed in full sun to partial shade.
