Description

Ithuriel’s spear grows in a variety of settings throughout California, mainly north of the transverse ranges. Like all triteleia it emerges from dormancy in mid-winter with a whorl of narrow lance-shaped leaves. The loose umbel of trumpet shaped flowers are typically violet or lavender in color. The ‘silver queen’ selection displays flowers of bright white. Like all of California’s triteleias, Ithuriel’s spear will begin to go dormant as the seeds develop in later spring. This bulb is naturally completely dormant by the end of spring through fall. Care should be taken to keep the plant dry during dormancy. Ithuriel’s spear will produce numerous bulblets over time. The bulbs can be dug and redistributed in the garden or given away. It also volunteers readily if grown in its native range under favorable conditions.
