Description

This little violet is a denizen of coastal mountains from Big Sur in Monterey County to the Oregon border and beyond. The redwood violet grows in understory shade as a low patch of heart-shaped leaves. The patch will spread as the stems root in moist soil. Unlike some other California violets, redwood violet is evergreen. In spring, short flower stalks will appear displaying the intricate flowers that the violet family is known for. The flowers are bright yellow with maroon details. These really brighten up a dark corner of the garden! The resulting seed can volunteer under the right circumstances. Redwood violet is undemanding in the garden, but needs a shady site and regular moisture. Care must be taken to prevent this low grower from being smothered by larger plants or leaf litter. It is easily lost. Consider redwood violet as a subject in a container, where it can be appreciated and protected.
