Description
Mojave yucca is one of several yucca species found in the southeastern corner of the state. Obviously, it grows throughout the Mojave Desert. From there it extends into Nevada, Arizona, Utah and northern Baja. It is the only species that also grows in coastal settings. Mojave yucca grows as a rosette of succulent lance-like leaves of a waxy green color. The growth rate is quite slow. Any more than an inch of growth in a year would be exceptional. Unlike other yucca, Mojave yucca is not likely to produce basal offsets. After many years, Mojave yucca will begin producing fronds of large creamy flowers often with a touch of violet. These are quite fragrant at night. In the wild they attract yucca moths to aid in pollination. Fortunately, the Mojave yucca does not die after flowering. It will continue to grow as a stalk topped with a tuft of leaves. After many (many) years, this dramatic plant will start branching on its way to becoming a little tree. Mojave yucca is quite long lived, thriving for well over one hundred years if not disturbed. A sunny site with well-draining soil suits it best. Mojave yucca is reported to thrive in the SF Bay Area.
